Well, you missed the Renaissance for a couple of hundred years, the boys do not wear socks, and women wear a little less of a voluminous skirt, blouse, skirt, hat and apron (no matter how hot it was outside!) However, that's what Halloween costume parties are for! If you're feeling particularly Elizabethan, there is a variety of Renaissance-themed costumes to choose from.

The Renaissance is extended from 15 to 17 centuries, the plague in the previous century weakened the feudal system, Crusades brought new ideas (not to mention textiles and dyes), and the beginning of an urban middle class emerged. Clothing has been characterized by a higher color and style of the time medieval, as dyes and fabrics are more varied, accessible and cheap. Fashion quickly became a status symbol, with the men and women of the ruling class trying to outdo each other with elaborate styles and colors. Purple was reserved for royalty, but the darker colors are often used to better show the jewelry and embroidery.

Even farmers could improve their clothing, which frightened the nobility while the laws were passed to restrict what colors could use. The lower class responded angrily by sewing two fabrics together and "cut" his outer clothing, cut the shapes and colors revealing prohibited below brightest. This became elaborate cuts and designs, colors hanging on a showy display.
